Mass Cancels Century-old Library Book Ban Twain


Charlton, Massachusetts (AP) - A library of Massachusetts has the work of Mark Twain's "Diary of Eve" back on the shelf over a century after being banned.

Charlton Public Library trustees this week voted unanimously to return the book to sales, return the board in 1906 decided to prohibit 1905-short story.

Trustee Richard Whitehead said the move is made to coincide with the American Library Association Banned Books Week.


The book is written from the perspective of biblical Eve. It was forbidden, as trustee, Frank Wakefield questioned the examples of the naked Eve. Whitehead says Telegram and Gazette (http://bit.ly/r0CFgm), which considers the images of art.

Decision 1906 drew the attention of the New York Times, which reported that Twain was not particularly worried.

Charlton is located 40 miles southwest of Boston.
