REM, "called One Day" After 31 Years, Affecting Many

(Reuters) - REM, once called "Best Rock & Roll Band", said on Wednesday it had decided to "call it a day" after more than 30 years to generate hits and sold millions of records.

Key members of the band, whose hits include "The One I Love" and "Losing My Religion", the fans treated to a message on their website, thanking them for their loyalty and say that they surprised even themselves with their performance.

"To our fans and friends as REM and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we decided to call it a day as a band.

"We walk with a great sense of gratitude and amazement of purpose to everything we have achieved. For anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our sincere thanks for your attention," the group said on its screen.

REM was originally composed by singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry, who suffered a brain aneurysm in 1995 the group "Monster" tour and later left the group.

But even without the Berry, the band continued making records and touring. In general, REM has released 15 albums since entering the ranks of rock bands in the 1980s when it became a sensation in the U.S. circuit college singing his hit "Radio Free Europe."

Their 1983 debut album "Murmur", helped to build a cult status among young people of America, and they crossed more success with the public in 1987-single, "The One I Love" taken from the album "Document".

In December 1987 Rolling Stone put the band on the front and he called the "Rock & Roll Band", and after the coming years, with successive hits.

"A wise man once said -" the opportunity to attend a party, is knowing when it's time to leave "We have built something amazing together .. We have done this. And now let's walk away from him," said Stipe in a statement.

The bassist Mills said that while "the maintenance of collapse" and his recent tour to support the album, the group began to wonder what was coming. In his view, the songs on this record has awakened "a natural line" between his work as a group and its future as individual artists.

"We've always been a group in the true meaning of the Brothers who loves and really respects each other, we feel a bit like pioneers in this -.. There is no discord here, no fall break, no lawyers clash. We made this decision together with other friendly and best interests at heart. The time just feels good, "Mills said.
